Burghin in St Louis

Last week I had the pleasure of traveling to the city that gave us Budweiser, The Cardinals, and our fearless sometimes leader, Stuart Bloj - St Louis, MO.  I was there on business with my boss.  We flew in Tuesday night.  We got there late, and were hungry.  Our choices were Denny's and some other joints that looked even sketchier.  We opted for Denny's.  I didn't die.

Wednesday we had two client meetings.  By the end of both we were hungry again.  Whoda thunk it, right?  The boss is a member of a food club in NYC, not all that dissimilar to our Burgher Club.  Since I was driving, he got on the horn to his brothers in arms who suggested a number of local eateries they found on Chow Hound, City Search, and some other sites.

We finally settled on The Fatted Calf just outside of the city.  By the time we walked in, it was round 3:00 in the afternoon.  We were their only customers.  Maybe this was a good thing because they were friendly and happy to let me take photos to post on the Burgher Club website.  I ordered a burger with mushrooms, bleu cheese, lettuce, and tomato.  The burger was cooked perfectly.  It hung slightly over the understated bun.  The lettuce was crisp and the tomato juicy.  My only gripe was with the mushrooms and cheese.  I expected the shrooms to be sauteed and the bleu cheese a little creamier, but they appeared to be poured straight out of a can.  The cheese was tasty, but crumbly like the kind you'd put on salad.

I can't complain though.  It was delicious, and if I were in St Louis again I would surely return.

In the mean time, one of my favorite food writers, Alan Richman has reviewed his five favorite burgers in NYC.  Perhaps we could check one out on our next Burgher Night feast.
